Rear extension in Chiswick

This rear extension has opened up the house to the garden. The existing outbuildings were removed to make way for a new family kitchen. A new opening was formed to link this area to the existing double reception room. The laundry has been relocated to the centre of the house, from where a stair leads down to the cellar which has been refurbished to provide full height, dry storage space.

We find that many houses of this period have service rooms blocking the view from the main rooms to the garden. Turn of the century kitchens were built as service spaces, whereas today many families want a kitchen which can become the centre of family life. A reconsideration of the layout of these rooms can be very beneficial.
